For centuries, Indian homes have ended a meal with paan. Here's what each ingredient traditionally brings to your beeda — tap one to explore.
पान का पत्ता
Chewing paan increases saliva flow, which helps kick-start digestion — that's why it's served after every Indian feast.
Betel leaf, elaichi, laung and saunf are India's original mouth fresheners — no artificial mint needed.
Clove and betel leaf contain natural compounds studied for antibacterial properties. (Still brush your teeth! 😉)
Gulkand — sun-cured rose petals — is traditionally eaten to cool the body on hot Bengaluru afternoons.
The betel leaf is a cousin of black pepper and is rich in polyphenols, the same family of antioxidants found in green tea.
A small, sweet, shared moment to end a meal — paan has brought families and friends together for generations.
Heritage
From ancient Sanskrit texts to royal courts and today's fire paan — the humble beeda has travelled a long way.
Sanskrit texts call paan tambula. Classical Ayurvedic writings recommend it after meals for digestion and a fresh mouth, and list it among life's refined pleasures.
Betel leaves are offered in pujas and placed on the sacred kalash. Offering paan-supari to a guest is a sign of deep respect — and heart-shaped leaves still bless every Indian wedding.
Kings and nawabs kept ornate silver paandaans, and serving paan became an art of hospitality. In Lucknow's courtly culture, the folded gilori was a symbol of grace and good manners.
In royal courts a beeda was placed before the assembly — whoever picked it up accepted the mission. That's where the Hindi idiom “beeda uthana”, to take up a bold task, comes from.
Every region grew its own leaf and style. Bihar's Magahi paan and Varanasi's Banarasi paan are so special they carry a Geographical Indication (GI) tag — and you'll find these leaves at our counter.
From the classic Kolkata meetha to chocolate, fire and ice gola paan — we carry this 2,000-year-old ritual forward across our three branches, one hand-folded beeda at a time.
Taste the tradition →Betel is a climbing vine from the pepper family — paan and kali mirch are cousins.
The heart-shaped leaf symbolises love and prosperity — that's why it's part of Indian weddings.
A folded paan is called a beeda in most of India and a gilori in Lucknow.
